Valeriya Chernikova's talent was obvious at a young age. At only 15 years old, she was invited to leave her hometown Maykop in south Russia to study at Kolmogorov School one of the leading High Schools in Russia, associated with Lomonosov Moscow State University. Subsequently, she earned her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Physical Chemistry at this prestigious Institution.

A porous material with tailor-made pockets stitched into its structure is a promising material for sensing noxious gases. A thin film of the material, coated onto an electrode, formed an electronic sensor that could detect traces of sulfur dioxide gas1.

Barbour (University of Stellenbosch).

Membrane-based gas separations can improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact. The latest work led by the AMPM Center Director, Prof. Mohamed Eddaoudi, and his collaborators unveils the successful fabrication and integration of two class of materials, namely MOFs and polymers, into a hybrid membrane system named “Mixed Matrix Membrane”.

A metal-organic framework that can take up twice its weight in water and then release it when humidity falls. Humidity control is a vital aspect of air conditioning, but high energy requirements make conventional methods expensive and environmentally damaging.

The study of topology is important for describing the structures and determining the properties of porous materials, such as zeolites and metal–organic frameworks. Such approaches can also be helpful in the designed synthesis of new materials. The school will focus on the theory of topology and the use of computer programs to aid in the analysis of structures.

The new rht-MOF-9 was synthesized from predesigned poliheterocyclic nitrogen-rich hexacarboxylate ligand to result in highly porous material of interesting H2 and CO2 adsorption properties.

A catalytic, high yielding procedure for the synthesis of 9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarbo-nitrile has been developed, following its facile hydrolytic transformation to 9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarboxylic acid. Both compounds are versatile building blocks for material science, medicinal and supramolecular chemistry.

The liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) method was effectively implemented to deliberately grow/construct ultrathin (0.5-1 μm) continuous and defect-free ZIF-8 membranes. Permeation properties of different gas pair systems (O2/N2, H2/CO2, CO2/CH4, C3H6/C3H8, CH4/n-C4H10 were studied using the time lag technique.

A novel porous organic polymer has been synthesized, using the molecular building block approach, to deliberately encompass aldehyde functionalities, amenable to post functionalization. The resultant porous framework allows a facile, unprecedented and anticipated one-step, quantitative, post-synthetic amine functionalization. As envisioned, investigation of CO2 adsorption properties showed a significant enhancement of the CO2 affinity at low coverage versus the pristine material. This feature considerably enriched the CO2 selectivity and improved the CO2 removal capabilities from N2 and CH4 containing gases akin to post-combustion capture and natural gas upgrading applications.

Scientists from KAUST FMD3 group have discovered and developed a unique, efficient, inexpensive, and reusable metal-organic framework (MOF) platform, based on the 12-connected fcu topology. These MOFs are built from the assembly of 12-connected, hexanuclear rare-earth (RE) clusters with linear fluorinated/non fluorinated, homo/hetero-functional ligands. This particular fcu-MOF platform was selected because of its unique structural characteristics combined with the ability/potential to dictate and regulate its chemical properties.

Scientists from KAUST and the University of South Florida (USF) have discovered and developed a unique, efficient, inexpensive, and reusable metal-organic framework (MOF) material for carbon capture and separation that could lead to new clean-air and energy saving technologies. Their joint breakthrough, funded by a KAUST-sponsored faculty-initiated collaboration grant, offers new tools for confronting the world’s challenges in controlling carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
 
In a paper published in the prestigious journal Nature, Mohamed Eddaoudi, Professor of Chemical Science and Associate Director of the Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials Research Center at KAUST, and his colleagues – an international group of multidisciplinary scientists and students, reveal and describe the unique properties of a previously underused material that offers a new mechanism for capturing CO2.
